Back in the day most of us Amiga users were in our teens and had the luxury of spending our youth tinkering and tweaking with our Amiga systems, but for a lot of users they left the Amiga to move onto the PC or Mac and when they come back to the Amiga they have been overwhelmed by the complexities of setting up the system. The Amiga is a very advanced system for its age but it still can be a troublesome machine to get up and running and for those who have forgotten how to use the Amiga or are getting into it for the first time Classic Workbench (WB) is the ideal package for them. First off this is a free download however you need to have the original Workbench 3.0/3.1 discs to install Classic WB.

The packs can be downloaded from the main Classic WB in zip format these then need to be unpacked and you are presented with a HDF which needs to be used in WinUAE or E-UAE (For Mac). * Please be aware that you will need the Kickstart Roms and ADFs of Workbench on your computer first before you can run Classic WB.

There are a variety of packs to choose from:

I won`t go into how to install these packs as it is quite easy for any Amiga user to do and there are detailed instructions on the website however I will say that these are brilliant packs which really make setting up your Amiga as hassle free as possible and add some nice modern features that others will not be aware of. Features such as being able to scroll windows in real time by using a patch called FBlit, floating menus and actions that can be applied directly to the icons in the more advanced packs Scalos is used which creates a more stable Workbench introducing features such as progress bars when copying files and transparent icons when being moved. Personally I am big fan of the FULL version of Classic WB, I like the Magic WB Icons as they are fast and easy to read, many others prefer the ADVSP which uses the New Icons, these are great as they are made without the familiar 3D border around them but they can slow down your system and in my case there have been issues with the pallette causing the icons to look odd at times. However this is just a minor niggle which is more of a personal preference, the end line is that these are free and even if they had to be paid for they would be worth it. It is easy to install and gives your Amiga a new lease of life!
